Understanding Your Insurance…

Posted by:

It is important to understand how your health insurance plan works so that you can best anticipate your financial responsibility.  In some respects, health insurance can be compared to your car insurance, but there are differences so it is good to learn how your health insurance works and how much you are responsible for paying.  Of course, all insurances have different type of coverages, however, please take a look at this excellent educational handout, created by the  Maricopa County Medical Society, regarding the general breakdown and understanding of important terms for your insurance coverage…

Holiday Strategies for Weight Loss

Posted by:

Well, Thanksgiving will soon be here, and that starts the season of holiday get togethers, candy at the office, more lunches and dinners out, more traveling for some and vacations and of course, more stress than normal.

Remember, the average weight gain over the Holiday season is 6-8

pounds!  Wouldn’t it be great to fall below the average?

There are a few important things you must remember during the Holiday season…..

Ok. So let’s go over a few strategies that will help you get through this tempting time.

1. Seek Support! Through your family, friends, your trainer, health coach, internet support groups, or clubs.

2. If you are on the Take Shape for Life program, don’t make exceptions during the holidays. Stick with it and choose to get in shape and get healthy.

3. don’t skip a meal

4. choose healthy snacks such as celery, boullion, or dill pickle and no starchy vegetables

5. Eat 5-6 low glycemic, low cal meals throughout the day to keep your blood sugar in check and your stomach happy

6. Remember that Alcohol has empty calories and lots of them!

7. Ask for sparkling water and lime instead of beer and wine

8. If there is a special holiday food that you will feel deprived of, if you don’t have…then take one or two bites-just a taste and you will be surprised how satisfying it is.

9. Eat more of the salads and green veggies at a dinner party and make the meat a “side dish”

10. Peanut butter and cheese are too full of fat calories!!

11. No Popcorn when you go to the movies. It is cooked in oil and not a healthy choice. Instead, bring along a protein bar or celery to munch on.

12. Don’t serve family meals family-style. Keep pots and dishes away from the table where it’s all too easy to go for seconds!

13. Learn to “eyeball” the proper serving size that is right for you and stick to them when dining out or dishing up meals.

14. Eat healthy fast foods…such as Medifast low glycemic and low calorie meals!! Don’t leave home without it!

15. Physical activity is a good way to burn calories and it makes you feel great before going to a party, and remember to drink a shake on your way out the door!

16. Use your time shopping at the mall to get some extra exercise in…park away from the entrance and walk with stomach muscles tight throughout your shopping spree.

17. Have Fun!!!! Become great at mingling…Become the life of the party!!!

Stop. Challenge. Choose.

Make the greater choice of health, make the smaller choices that matter. - Dr. Wayne Anderson.

Make the greater choice of health, make the smaller choices that matter. – Dr. Wayne Anderson.

Stop for a moment. Challenge yourself to reflect on what’s most important to you. Now choose the path that will help you to live a longer, happier life. Choose health.

To have more time to spend with your family, to have the energy to enjoy your hobbies, to have a body resilient to disease—these are dreams that we share, and health is their foundation.

Intuitively, you know this, but addressing it directly can feel both scary and overwhelming.

I know because I’ve felt the same way. And then I was introduced to Dr. Andersen (we call him Dr. A) and his Habits of Health system.

Dr. A along with my personal health coach Dr. Steve Feyrer-Melk, taught me how to make little choices that accumulated over time to create optimal health.

No crash diets. No fad workouts. Just a down-to-earth approach that works for normal, everyday people.

The program is Take Shape For Life, I lost 45 puounds, and learned the Habits of Health System and a path to Optimal Health.

Now I stop, challenge, and choose. I think about what’s important to me and challenge myself to

be better, which results in my choosing the path to optimal health.

Have you met Dr. A? Watch this video to learn more about his work, share it with your friends,

and then let’s talk about where you are and where you’d like to be. A longer, healthier life is within reach!

We can get there together.

Check out Dr A’s inspirational short introduction video at http://bit.ly/1brXdUB

You can have optimal health. Let me help.

With Health & Happiness,

Dr. John Marshall

Halloween and the Flu!

Posted by:

Halloween is coming up fast and the flu season is  here! Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine. Getting vaccinated  each year provides the best protection against influenza throughout flu season.  There’s no trick to keeping  your hands clean to help you avoid getting sick and  spreading germs to others. Wash your hands  with soap and clean running water for 20 seconds. If that’s not possible, use  alcohol-based hand rubs and bring along with you for the kiddos too! (And don’t forget to brush those fangs!)

Cold versus Flu??

Posted by:

The flu and the common cold are both respiratory illnesses but they are caused by different viruses. Because these two types of illnesses have similar flu-like symptoms, it can be difficult to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone. In general, the flu is worse than the common cold, and symptoms such as fever, body aches, extreme tiredness, and dry cough are more common and intense. Colds are usually milder than the flu. People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose. Colds generally do not result in serious health problems, such as pneumonia, bacterial infections, or hospitalizations.  FLU VACCINE NOW IS THE BEST PREVENTION, AVAILABLE IN OFFICE!
